FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES DETECTION AND PREVENTION IN GOVERNMENTAL ACCOUNTING: This study aims to (i) identify the primary methods used to detect and prevent fraudulent activities in governmental accounting, (ii) evaluate the effectiveness of these methods, and (iii) propose enhancements to current fraud prevention strategies. A survey design is justified by its ability to gather detailed information from a large number of governmental accountants. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 350 respondents is determined to ensure statistical validity. The case study focuses on Lagos, chosen for its extensive governmental financial operations. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument is 0.87. Findings reveal that while existing fraud detection and prevention methods are generally effective, there are significant areas that require improvement, such as real-time monitoring and advanced data analytics. Recommendations include investing in more sophisticated fraud detection technologies and continuous training for accountants on the latest fraud prevention techniques.
